Backward compatibility and system requirements

As a result of supporting new languages such as Hindi and as part of its support lifecycle policy, TRADOS no longer supports older generations of Microsoft Windows operating system and Microsoft Office platforms, as follows:

  • Microsoft Windows NT, Windows Millenium Edition, and Windows 98SE are no longer supported. Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional, and Windows 2003 Server continue to be supported.
  • Microsoft Office 97 is no longer supported. Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP and Office 2003 (Word, PowerPoint and Excel) continue to be supported.

When it comes to backward compatibility, the following applies:

  • Translation memories created in version 7 cannot be opened in earlier versions of Translator's Workbench (such as 6.5 and earlier). This is due to the support for new languages but also to being able to store Unicode content in any language in translation memory metadata fields such as text and attribute fields.
  • A backward-compatible export file format is still available for use with older versions of TRADOS Team and TRADOS Freelance; however this format does not support any of the new Unicode-related enhancements. By default, export files are now encoded in Unicode (UTF-8) to support the new languages and other Unicode content in translation memories. These new export files can only be imported into version 7 translation memories and cannot be imported into older versions unless the backward-compatibile file format is used.
  • SDL Trados 2006 can open translation memories created in version 7, 6.5 and earlier. To benefit from the new Unicode-related feature enhancements, it is necessary to export 6.5 or earlier translation memories and then import them into newly created SDL Trados 2006 translation memories.
